Daffodil Hexagon Photo Tutorial

Its Saint David's Day today!!!

I thought I would revisit my Daffodil pattern from ages ago and post a photo tutorial for you.

You will need scraps of:

Dark Yellow yarn

Pale Yellow yarn

Green yarn

I have used Cascade 220 which is a worsted weight (aran UK) yarn and a 5mm hook.  Use whatever yarn and hook you fancy or have to hand.

Measurement:

My hexagon measures 5 inches (13 cm) from edge to edge.

Crochet Hook:

H size / 5mm, or whatever size suits the yarn you are using.

Start with Dark Yellow and make a Magic Ring.  Make a loop with the yarn end to the left and the working yarn to the right.

Insert your hook from front to back through the ring and draw a loop through.  Chain 1.

Now work 6 single crochet (double crochet UK) into the ring working over the yarn tail.

When you have 6 stitches in the ring, pull tightly on the yarn tail to close the ring.

Join by working a slip stitch through the front loop only of the first stitch you made.

Chain 3.  This chain 3 counts as a double crochet stitch (treble crochet stitch UK).

Work 1 double crochet through the front loop of each stitch.  As you work, the stitches will start to stick up forming the trumpet of the daffodil. 

When you have worked 6 stitches, ignore the next slip stitch and join with a slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain 3 at the start of the round.

Chain 1 and work a single crochet (double crochet UK) in the same place.

Chain 1.

Repeat the last two steps working a single crochet (double crochet UK), chain 1 in each stitch.  A total of 6 stitches and 6 chain stitches.  Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch of the round and end the yarn.

Now, we are going to work in the back loops of the first round.  Turn your 'trumpet' upside down and you will see the bumps we need to work into.

Turn the trumpet back the right way and with Pale Yellow, insert your hook through both back loops.  Pull up a loop.

Chain 3, this chain 3 counts as 1 double crochet (treble crochet UK), work 2 more double crochet (treble crochet UK) in the same place.

Chain 2.

Work 3 double crochet (treble crochet UK) through the back loops of the next stitch.  Chain 2.

Repeat the last step until you have 6 groups of 3 double crochet (treble crochet), don't work the last chain 2.

To join, work a half double crochet (half treble crochet UK) into the top of the first stitch of the round.

Now your hook is in the right place for the next round.

Chain 3.

Now we are going to work a cluster stitch in the next 3 stitches.  Start by beginning a double crochet (treble crochet UK) in the next stitch.

Yarn over hook and draw through two loops.  We are only working off two loops, leaving one loop of the stitch still on the hook.

Repeat the last two steps in the next two stitches.  You will have 4 loops on your hook.

Yarn over hook and draw through all loops.  This is cluster stitch.

Chain 3.

Slip stitch into chain 2 of last round.

Follow the instructions for the last six images until you have 6 cluster stitches.  After working the last slip stitch, end the yarn.

Join the Green yarn by pulling up a loop in the top of a cluster stitch.

Chain 1 and work a single crochet (double crochet UK) in the same place.

Work 2 double crochet (treble crochet UK) into the chain 2 of round 3.  

Work 1 treble crochet (double treble UK) in the same place.  Wrap the yarn around the hook twice to work a treble crochet (double treble UK) stitch.  Then work off two loops at a time as normal.

Work 2 more double crochet (treble crochet UK) in the same place.

Work 1 single crochet in the top of the cluster stitch of round 4.

Repeat the instructions for the last four images until you have reached the last chain 2 space.  Work the stitches into the chain 2 space as before but skip the last single crochet (double crochet UK).

Join by working a slip stitch into the first single crochet (double crochet UK) of the round.

Chain 3.  This chain 3 counts as a double crochet (treble crochet UK).  Work 1 double crochet (treble crochet UK) in the next 2 stitches.

In the treble crochet (double treble crochet UK) stitch work 1 double, 1 treble and 1 double crochet (1 treble, 1 double treble and 1 treble crochet UK)

Now work 1 double crochet (treble crochet UK) in each stitch across to the next treble crochet (double treble crochet).

Repeat the last two steps until you have completed 5 sides.  Work the corner stitches as before.

Work 1 double crochet (treble crochet UK) in the next 2 stitches.  Join with a slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain 3 and end yarn.

Sew in those nasty loose ends, make sure to thoroughly sew the end of the Magic Ring in otherwise it'll loosen up as time goes by.

Ta Da!!!  Finished!
